Doctors' Protest Disrupts Hospitals Across India

Aug 13 News Standard

Hospital services faced significant disruptions across several Indian cities on Tuesday following a nationwide doctors' protest triggered by the tragic rape and murder of a trainee medic in Kolkata. Thousands of doctors took to the streets of Kolkata and West Bengal on Monday to condemn the heinous crime, demanding justice for the victim and improved security measures at government hospitals. The 31-year-old doctor's lifeless body was discovered on Friday, with police confirming rape and murder, leading to the arrest of a police volunteer.

The protests expanded on Tuesday, with over eight thousand government doctors in Maharashtra, home to Mumbai, halting work in all hospital departments except emergency services. In New Delhi, junior doctors staged a sit-in protest outside a major government hospital, holding placards that read "Doctors are not punching bags." Similar protests impacted hospital services in Lucknow and Goa.

The Indian Medical Association highlighted the dire working conditions, excessive workloads, and violence faced by doctors, addressing Health Minister J P Nadda in a letter before their meeting.
