January 15, Reuters For the second day in a row, heavy fog and cold shrouded significant portions of northern India on Monday, causing delays to flights and train services in the nation's capital, New Delhi.

According to an unnamed airport official, over 100 flights in Delhi were delayed on Sunday, but on Monday morning, some flights had started.

On Monday, at least 313 flights out of Delhi were delayed and 82 planes were canceled, according to the aviation website Flightradar24.

Due to heavy fog, at least eighteen trains from various regions of the country were running late to Delhi, according to a railway document cited by news agency ANI, in which Reuters had a minority ownership, on X.

According to the official, thick fog caused the city's Indira Gandhi International Airport to remain closed from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday (2230 GMT on Saturday to 0530 GMT on Sunday), causing severe delays at airports around the nation.

In one video, a man is seen striking a pilot who is announcing a delayed flight on the aircraft. Other videos on social media and news networks depict irate travelers fighting with airport workers in New Delhi and other airports.

According to the federal aviation minister of India, the usage of a second runway—which has the CAT III navigation system, which allows planes to land even in poor visibility—is being accelerated.

"Incidences of unruly behaviour amidst this are unacceptable, and will be dealt with strongly in line with the existing legal provisions," Jyotidaditya Scindia said in a post on X.

The national meteorological service has forecast "very dense fog" on Tuesday and "dense fog and a cold wave" in New Delhi for Monday and Tuesday, respectively, with a low of 4 degrees Celsius (39.2 Fahrenheit).

"On the runway, literally, for the last two hours at Delhi Airport," X user Harteerath Singh Ahluwalia posted on the social media site on Monday.
