International Tea Day, Celebrating Culture, Combating Hunger

Introduction

Since 2019, the United Nations has observed International Tea Day on May 21st to raise awareness of the cultural and economic importance of tea around the globe. It raises awareness of tea's role in combating hunger and poverty and promotes group efforts towards sustainable tea production and consumption. Historically observed on December 15 in countries that produce tea, the day highlights the effects of the world trade in tea on laborers and producers while promoting fair trade principles.

Background

The World Social Forum in 2005 presented the idea of International Tea Day, which was subsequently observed in Sri Lanka and New Delhi. The UN General Assembly approved the concept in December 2019 after the FAO Intergovernmental Group on Tea supported it in 2015.
