Introduction

Indian politician Kodikunnil Suresh was born on June 4, 1962, and is a Special Invitee member of the Congress Working Committee. He serves as the chief whip for the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha as well as the working president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). As the India alliance candidate for Speaker of the Lok Sabha in 2024, Suresh has submitted his nomination. He was elected eight times to represent Mavelikara in Kerala in the Eighteenth Lok Sabha. He was previously the Union Minister of State for Labor and Employment. In addition, he held the position of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary.

Early life and education

As the youngest son of Kunjan and Thankamma, he was born into a low-income household in Kodikunnil, Thiruvananthapuram district. He graduated with an LL.B. from Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram after completing his pre-degree at Mar Ivanios College in the same city.

Political career

He won the Lok Sabha seat from the Adoor constituency three times in a row, in 1991, 1996, and 1999. His first victory was in 1989. He did, however, lose the elections in 1998 and 2004. Kodikunnil was a member of the All India Congress Committee as well as the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. Later on, he rose to the positions of DCC President of Kollam and General Secretary of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. He ran for the Lok Sabha in 2009 from the Mavelikara seat and won by a significant majority. After winning the following elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024, he went on to become the longest-serving member of the Lok Sabha, holding the post for 29 years.

Controversies

His victory in the 2009 general election was contested in the Kerala High Court on the grounds that he was a Christian and that his caste certificate was forged. The Supreme Court of India reversed the Kerala High Court's first declaration that his triumph was null and void.
