The Modi-led government in India wants to outlaw polygamy and grant women greater rights.

Feb 06 India Standard

On February 6, 2024, a state in India run by the political party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a measure that would change personal laws in all religions. The proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand aims to outlaw customs such as polygamy and guarantee equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters. The bill's contribution to fostering equality and unity in society was highlighted by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, despite criticism from certain Muslim leaders.

In addition to providing equal rights in divorce and ancestral property matters, the measure offers a number of improvements, such as raising the legal marriage age for girls to 21 and recognizing full rights for children regardless of their birth circumstances. Certain indigenous populations have been left out of the measures, despite the fact that the majority Hindu society generally supports these changes.

At the moment, several religious and tribal communities in India adhere to separate personal laws and practices. The ruling BJP has long promised the UCC along with other controversial measures like building a Hindu shrine and taking away Jammu and Kashmir's autonomy. But Muslim scholars see the UCC as a threat to religious customs and Islamic Sharia law, seeing it as a component of a larger plan to establish majoritarianism.
