Wrestling Federation of India Back in the Game with Conditional Lifting of Suspension

After nearly five months under a cloud of controversy, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has secured a reprieve with the United World Wrestling (UWW) lifting its suspension. However, this return comes with strings attached, primarily focusing on athlete empowerment and fair treatment.

The WFI had been embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal involving its former president, leading to both suspension and internal disputes. Now, under the terms of the lifted suspension, the WFI must hold fair elections for its Athletes' Commission, with voters and candidates exclusively comprising active or recently retired athletes. This election deadline is set for July 1st, 2024.

Furthermore, the WFI has pledged to ensure non-discrimination against all wrestlers, encompassing even those who voiced concerns about past issues. This guarantee extends to participation in all WFI events, including crucial Olympic trials.

This decision is a significant step forward for Indian wrestling, allowing athletes to compete under the national flag again within the UWW framework. However, the conditions highlight the ongoing need for transparency, fairness, and athlete-centric governance within the WFI. As the road to Paris 2024 unfolds, it will be crucial to see how the WFI implements these changes and builds a more inclusive and responsible future for the sport.
