Telefónica, a leading Spanish telecom giant, and Chainlink, a decentralized oracle provider, are joining forces to combat the growing threat of SIM swapping. This strategic partnership aims to develop tools that empower blockchain developers to protect themselves from hackers who exploit compromised SIM cards to authorize fraudulent transactions.

The initiative leverages Chainlink's Chainlink Functions solution, which securely bridges GSMA Open Gateway APIs with the Polygon network. GSMA Open Gateway serves as an API platform connecting developers to the networks of mobile operators within the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA).

The initial phase focuses on integrating Chainlink's capabilities with the GSMA Open Gateway's SIM SWAP API. This integration will enhance the security of blockchain transactions by enabling smart contracts to query whether a device's SIM card has undergone unauthorized changes. If the smart contract receives a response indicating a SIM swap, it will automatically deny the transaction, effectively preventing hackers from exploiting stolen credentials.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards bolstering security within the blockchain ecosystem. By combining Telefónica's expertise in telecommunications with Chainlink's oracle network, the partnership offers a novel approach to combatting SIM swapping, a tactic increasingly exploited by malicious actors.
